LOVE DOGS Dogs...
Much a do about Pit Bulls.. Pittie mixes, myths, mysteries and what do we REALLY know!!!
PIT BULL FACTS
* Overbreeding, improper and often abusive "training", drugs and neglect cause about ONE MILLION Pit Bulls every year to be put down.. that's 2000 dogs a day!!!!
* In a test to evaluate different dog temperaments Pit Bulls scored higher than Golden Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels and Collies!!
* Helen Keller's dog was a Pit Bull! Mary Tyler Moore's Pit Bull helps her to control her diabetes by alerting her when her blood sugar is low! Sadly these are the sort of stories that RARELY get reported!!!!
Some of the dogs we pull have some Pit Bull mixed in.. some more than others but ALL been super sweet, highly trainable, obedient, playful, kind, extremely affectionate, athletic, silly, entertaining, eager to please, loving dogs.. (see photos)
There's been a great deal of reporting & story telling that unfairly categorizes Pits as innately violent and dangerous dogs.. it couldn't be farther from the truth. Even after the publicity of the Michael Vick case there continue to be fighting rings even right here in Westchester .. rather than vilify this wonderful breed we should be focused on eliminating the fighting rings and the horrific abuse that begins in puppyhood and often leads to years of torture and ultimately a painful death!
The American Pit Bull Terriers are outgoing and people loving. Devoted to family and friends, gentle with children, easy going in nature. Properly socialized dogs are extremely friendly, even with strangers and therefore do not make good guard dogs! THEY'RE INTELLIGENT, EAGER TO PLEASE AND TEND TO REMAIN PLAYFUL THROUGHOUT THEIR LIVES.
Pit Bulls by nature will not redirect aggression on humans even during HIGH arousal! Sadly its this very trait that makes them appealing to people who want to use them for dog fighting!!
Some are low key couch potatoes others need a job to channel their enthusiasm and energy. They excel in dog sports, search and rescue work, drug and bomb detection work and as therapy dogs.
Posters during World War II even featured the breed as a symbol of American courage and determination!" Pit Bulls have a wonderful sense of humor and bring tremendous hilarity to our lives!!
As owners we all have a responsibility to make sure ALL our dogs behave well in public. Your dog depends only on you!! When people are bombarded with bad headlines about Pit Bulls its easy to understand why they're nervous when they see one one the street ..Yet each of us along with our dogs can help alter that perception.
Remember before you can train a dog or rehabilitate a dog you HAVE TO CONNECT with him/her.. this can only be done by using your instincts and communicating with your energy. .. lovely, calm, respectful, kind clear energy!! Learning to understand dog language and communicate with your dog in a way she/he can understand.. they want to do the right thing..often we aren't clear & fair!
Its hard for people to continue to have negative feelings about Pit Bulls after they actually get to know one!
... and speaking of Pit Bull mixes..
Thanks to a generous donation in of honor of the beloved and most DARLING Westie named LULU we are rescuing a group of special pit mix dogs from high kill shelters who might otherwise have been left to die. No more meaningful gesture could better represent the indescribable bond and beautiful life LULU shared with her human Mom! LULU was a devoted, happy, loyal, affectionate and very charismatic girl.. she knew always just how much attention and appreciation everyone in her life needed.. & she was always there to offer it... She never let anyone down. LULU'S spirit will live on in the hearts of those who love her and in the many dogs who will enjoy a life of belonging, purpose and love!
Hooray for MISS FIZ & friends!!!!
COMMENTS FROM A VOLUNTEER ABOUT FIZ....
" No dog has made me giggle and laugh as much as Fiz. She is a sweetie and a silly girl to boot.
I got to meet Fiz while she was in her kennel and she was well mannered there, patient and calm. I walked her out of her kennel to the play area and she proceeded to walk nicely, with a few pulls here and there.. she just wanted to say hello.
First touch and she got so happy she started zooming around me. Not just any zoom either, a full tuck and run zoom. That one touch made her so happy that she had to come back for more. Fiz loves to be loved on. She is a sweetheart of a little girl! She does not mind being touched anywhere and she loves to be in your lap. She gets excited when she is happy and zooms but she has a remarkable way of zooming around you and never running into you. I watched her do this to know that she is in full control of her zoomies!
Fiz is a smart girl. She will work for treats but she didn't actually eat my treats, she played with them. Anything you give her is cause for celebration! I gave her some dog biscuits and she ran around throwing them in the air and catching them. She's very much an entertainer and an entertain yourself kind of gal. This baby knows how to let the good times roll. . Watching Fiz just live and breath is an exceptional way to spend an afternoon.
Fiz is approx one year old .
Fiz is good with people and other dogs. She is unsure of cats at the moment. Probably has had limited socialization with them.
Fiz is just one of a group of dogs we rescued in LULU'S HONOR!
The HUNK, handsome HOLDEN, Zipitty-do-dah,
Mister B. & the loverly Lana
Some of them are heart worm positive, though very early stage and easily treated.. Requires 3 months .. we often keep them with southern care givers during treatment and bring them to NY when they've got a clean bill of health! Its an expensive process but one we've done MANY TIMES fortunately with GREAT success! So thank twice to Miss LULU and her Mom for their generous and loving donation!
The GRACIE FUND..
Once again our friends, supporters and adoptive family of the dear most loving and wonderful Miss Gracie have donated generously to support our cause of rescuing dogs from certain death.. dogs who would otherwise have been overlooked because of coat color, breed prejudices, shyness, age and health status! We are reworking our web site including the special page devoted to the extra kind work we can do in Gracies honor!
Little LuLu's Story
This dear dog suffered terribly before she got into our care.. she was dehydrated, terribly malnourished, emaciated and had some sores.. Heaven only knows how such a beautiful sweetness ended up in such distress! Like most dogs LuLu lives in the moment and thankfully right now and for her future all her moments will know love!
Huck's Inspiration.. A Christmas gift
Huck spent way too much time at a shelter waiting to be chosen..He knew he was meant to live with a family of his own to love... AND he finally was chosen.. by us.. and when we met him we were SO HAPPY!!! Huck is a fantastic dog in every way! He lived in our office apartment with a pack of littles and loved us all with such gentleness and enthusiasm! WE LOVED knowing him & having him share our lives and as happy as we were it hurt just a little when the time came for us to wave goodbye as we watched him drive off to live his happy life with his wonderful forever family! Well, needless to say Huck's family LOVES him to bits.. and wanted to give the same chance to another dog who was waiting and hoping to one day be chosen!
WHAT?!?!? I GOT CHOSEN??????
Yes!!!!This sweet girl is on her way to a great life now! Thanks HUCK!! She's never had a name so we are hoping Hucks family will want to name her! Stay tuned for more happy updates!
