About Antonio from Michelle
"Adam" arrived to Love Dogs on February 15th. He was extremely fearful and hesitant around people. I am fortunate to have him living in the main office where I am found often throughout the day. This beautiful little guy needed to settle and decompress. Adam required the time to realize that no one was going to invade his space or put him in situations that he just wasn't ready for. Collectively, we let him figure out his new situation on his own terms. It did not take long for his true nature to peek out.

So began the emergence of....Antonio! Antonio is inquisitive, playful and finds comfort in being touched and handled with respect to his boundaries. He is making huge strides in his confidence on a daily basis! He has spent time being allowed to find his safe zone, this is a pillow that he lays on in the office. On this pillow, he is more secure and able to enjoy his interactions with us. He will eat treats, accept long double handed petting and even being picked up!
We recently began the task of preparing Antonio for going outside. While on his pillow, we pet and positively interact with Antonio. Once we set the tone, we pick him up and hold him close. He finds security in your arms! We will put on his leash and a slip lead. Antonio is carried to a play yard (accompanied by Bodhi, our wonderful therapy dog to the dogs!) where we put him down and let him lead the way. He is currently most comfortable near the fence line. We are using as little leash pressure as possible. We go where Antonio leads.
Although this is a new process, he has already begun to take charge. He will take a few steps and prefers when his handler walks in front of him. He will stop for a moment. Sit and smell the air. He is starting to use his nose and observe his surroundings. This has been one of the most rewarding relationships that I have had the privilege to develop. There is no better feeling then knowing that Antonio is finding his way to being a content and joyful dog. Through all of these transitions, his tail has not stopped wagging!

UPDATE: Antonio is now fully comfy on walks.. it is amazing to see this little guy traipsing around.. tail and head held high! Tone has also taken a big step this week and has begun socializing with doggie pals off the leash in the yards! His buddies Jewel, Greta and Gracie are a great match for sensitive little Antonio. He is doing really well with the girls.. not quite playing... YET! He has also made new humans friends.. other handlers are now getting to know Antonio during walks, playtimes and lots of treat giving!
