Sweet and lovable little Birdie is one unique and quirky little dog! She is definitely some sort of border collie and possibly spaniel mixed in there.. she looks and acts just like a herding dog does! Sensitive while being independent and affectionate all at once! Birdie is playful, bubbly and totally relaxed and chill in her crate. She really becomes head over heals attached to one or two people while still having relationships with other peeps. Her favorite person on the farm is our trainer Jamie. They spend lots of time together and Birdie will start looking for Jamie if she hears her voice but can't see her! She's not obsessive about it though.. she'll quickly move on to the next thing.
REALLY IMPORTANT NOTE: Birdie is a major escape artist! This clever girl has climbed out of a 7 foot fence and opened doors to get to people. She does not have separation anxiety by any means.. she's just crafty and knows how to use her skills! Every time she's gotten loose she's found one of us.

A little background on Birdie's ancestry.. Herding dogs have been bred for years and years for their intelligence and keen sensitivity movement in their surroundings. These qualities are imperative for them to be able to do the very important job of herding large cattle and livestock on farms. Taking a herding dog out of the farm environment doesn't remove those qualities so it is necessary for whoever is caring for a herding type dog to understand their quirks.
Birdie needs some trust building time when she starts to get to know someone new. Some positive playtime, treat exchange and exploration walks are all really fun for her and work to build a relationship. She can get a little protective of her space and surroundings.. someone barging in on her can be really scary. So we make sure to have her greet new people outside on neutral territory, rather than having them enter her zone with some high value treats like chicken. This works like a charm and sets her up for success for when it's time to go back inside! She can get a bit nippy if someone new pets her when she isn't ready or moves too quickly (remember that keen border collie movement sensitivity?!) We handle this by having her on a leash indoor with new people and making her we are reading her cues and giving her plenty of space.
Birdie girl is a couch lover and will lounge fully stretched out.. usually with a toy or two between her legs! She is a toy fanatic! Any kind of plushy or rope toy will promptly be destroyed after some playtime but she never actually eats anything so we let her enjoy that activity!

Birdie walks super well on the leash and hardly ever pulls. She keeps to herself and doesn't drag you to greet other dogs or anything. She's happy and content to simply be sharing this time with you! Birdie gets along well with calm, playful male type dogs. She has been seen to challenge rival, charged up females. Jeffery, TJ and Dudley are all really great friends of hers!
