Charming Charlie
smart, super friendly, curious, affectionate, young impressionable / male/ boxer.. mix / 46 lbs
Oh CHARLIE!!!!! Such a wonderful surprise!! We didn't hear that much about him beforehand.. just that he was a good boy.. his photo was nice enough but not at all as beautiful as he actually is! He's got a shimmery shiny black coat with a patch of unique coloring on his chest and glossy touches of brown on his limbs, a magnificent bottom lip and deep soulful brown eyes! He does the side to side head tilt when he's really really listening!! So darn cute!!
Charlie arrived to us on the last transport. He bounced off the transport van, eyes wide , tail sweepy happy.. greeted every member of the staff with a happy, sweet, melt in a puddle at your feet doggie hello!! Everyone enjoyed meeting Charlie! Then we watched as the rather large, (100 lbs) "Bellaboa" came joyously bounding over to him .. other dogs might have but Charlie didn't panic... instead, he performed an adorable play bow to which she immediately agreed.. YAY! Lets play!! So they sniffed and danced and pranced and played!! Each time Charlie felt a bit overwhelmed by Bella's XL exuberance he gave up his belly and waited for her to relax. He has some very nice dog social skills .. can read and feel accurately and responds in a "Hey, lets just be cool" way. AWESOME! We do give all our dogs time to settle in and show us more about themselves, but his behavior on day one... really nice to see! There's a lot of great qualities to work with!! A lot!
While out on his first tour of the farm Charlie was eager and thrilled to see and sniff so many new things.. He was easy to call back to attention.. and even on his own chose to check in with a glance like.. "is this good?Is this right?" Charlie walked right into the horse barn .. he was curious and appropriately cautious.. returning to his handler when he wanted to observe in safety! Charlie was wonderfully attuned to energy of his handler.. If she was relaxed and calm.. he was relaxed and calm!!

Charlie is a young dog that gets more charming and chill every day he is here!!! We are head over heels for this happy boy! He just keeps getting better!!!! Charlie is a dog that you want near all the time.. cuz hes sweet and cuddly and is happy to hang out and do fun lazy stuff.. or go out and do some active fun stuff.. he is not a high strung guy though.. his motto of late seems to be "everything... in moderation".. and friendship!!!!!!
Update from dog trainer Jamie:
Charlie is SUCH A COOL DOG! So fresh & lively with lovely, vibrant energy. Charlie is always happy, always cheerful. This doggie just loves life!! Charlie is a small boxer mix with very little knowledge of human rules for dogs.. so, understand at this point he might still dart off to greet approaching friends without a thought about you on the other end of the leash... His enthusiasm can be "powerful" lol... So we have been consistently & playfully working with Charlie on his leash manners and general obedience... aka manners! We feel its important to make learning fun for dogs especially the young ones.. Right now he's got a lot of pent up puppy energy to burn! Having some fun doggy playgroups and other learning activities keeps his brain busy, ( a great energy burner) while he develops the skills he needs to live a free & happy doggie life with people! Charlie just loves other dogs.. he can't get enough! Seriously, he will play all day and has never yet met a dog that isn't his friend.
When meeting new people Charlie understands and responds nicely to canine body language... humans should be shoulders back and off to the side.... allow him to approach & investigate, feel your calm welcoming energy and voila!! Charlie quickly becomes your wiggly, playful pal! So someone hinging at hips and bending over him... (also known as "the hover" ) might scare him a little..
Charlie is just coming up on 10 months old which means he's in his prime "doggy teenager" years! So although he has a super GREAT personality.... fun, loving, happy energy.. he lacks experience.. (as far as we know he grew up in a shelter environment) He needs guidance and an environment where he can learn more about people & have an abundance of positive experiences.
It's important Charlie's adopters expect to see some continuing puppy-like behaviors and understand its on them to provide consistent exercise and structure. He needs a home that is able and willing make him a priority through this next significant shaping chapter in his life. Because Charlie needs a calm leader to cheerfully guide him through a bunch of new experiences we believe its best that Charlie go to a home with older children (age 12 and up) who are eager to learn and want to be a part of his "upbringing". He will be one of those dogs you'll never forget!
