Meet Cora! She is a blossoming little darling. She is only about 7-8 months old and seems to have been through a lot during her short life so far. Trainer Jamie visited the south to visit one of the shelters we often pull from, Colleton County. During her tour of the shelter she came across this tiny brown dog hiding and shaking in the corner, terrified out of her wits. That was Cora! She was missing hair and looked completely lost and afraid of everything and everyone around her. There was no way we were going to leave her there and of course pulled her to safety.
We knew based off of our initial greeting that Cora would be on the fearful side.. and we are drawn to the shy, the fearful, the shut down dogs that require more time and space. We've become quite skilled at understanding and communicating with the shy ones as we've had so many and learned so much from each one! Opening the world to them in ways that spark curiosity tempts them to move beyond acquired reflexes.. seeing them then bravely emerge from their private shell, in their time and in their way is something we all relish!!!
Cora arrived just two weeks ago and is already showing incredible signs of a growing, hopeful pup. We have a core group of dogs that she spends most of her time with.. Hans, puppy Roxy, Bailey, Jeff, Lana, Sweet Pea and Muttsy have all been showing Cora the ropes on "normal dog things". Things like walking down the road on the leash, encountering new people, walking into new indoor spaces and developing relationships with us humans. Cora adores other dogs and she gains confidence bring around them!

Although Cora can behave fearfully in some situations she is surprisingly confident in others! Out in the play yard with her buddies Cora is free as a bird.. full of wonder and play .. she is super fun!! Cora zips around the yard chasing one dog and then looking to get chased by another. She runs full speed without a worry in the world. Freedom is an amazing thing for all creatures big and small! Cora enjoys leashed walks as well. Moving forward and getting her nose busy calms her mind and brings her into the present moment. As the walk goes on, you'll see her posture change from low and worried to head head high prancing in confidence.

Meeting new people for Cora is a work in progress.. she is inherently curious and fairly trusting but like most young unsocialized dogs she needs some time to assess and have it be up to her to make contact! When first meeting Cora and other dogs like Cora, it is best to completely ignore them. Even well intentioned attention like looking at them or leaning over to get a closer look is a very scary thing in their eyes. It's actually a pressure that ends up doing more harm the good. Cora is building relationships with our staff and is definitely learning to trust a fairly broad circle of new people.
We know Cora will continue to grow into a more confident and relaxed doggie.. she has all the makings of one who with the right amount of time and space will learn to trust her ability to manage the world around her.. especially with all the positive experiences she is having! At this point Cora has shown us that dog friends are very important to her.. she will definitely appreciate living in a home with other dogs. A fairly peaceful and somewhat predictable environment where she has the space to come into her own. Cora has come SO FAR in the short time she's been with us we fully expect she will continue to gain confidence and come to expect only good things!!!. Stay tuned for updates!!
