Gemmie
love me lab mix | female | 3-4 y | 54 lbs
Gemmie is a beautiful, joyful, smiley-faced & playful girl who wants more than anything to belong! She is most at ease when shes with her human friends and a part of activities! We get the feeling that she doesn't feel she can fully express enough gratitude and pleasure for sharing time, affection and fun with her friends.
Sadly Gems never had an opportunity to aquire doggie social skills (most likely because she was deprived of socializing with others when she was a puppy) As a result she gets easily confused and overwhelmed when around other dogs.. shes just unable to read and respond appropriately to common canine signals. We believe .. given her inability to roll with the fairly high level of dog generated excitement at the rescue, Gemmie might be at her best as a beloved only dog in her forever home. She is at her all time, most happy state is when she is sharing pretty much any aspect of life with her human friends! Shes for sure a people dog.. LOVES people.. she wants to work in partnership.. thrives on ning new things, playing games, snuggling .. sitting side by side observing nature.. its in those quieter connected times that Miss Gems is blissed! Its incredibly touching and rewarding to have such a meaningful influence on such a dear and dependent dog like Gem... all of her wants to be good and appreciated.. its impossible not to feel that when youre around her.. equally so you feel her need for guidance and guardianship and of course.. LOVE!
Gem likes to know where her place is & is not one who will feel safe if left alone for long periods of time.. she is most definitely a companion dog... Her ideal person would be an reasonably active and human friend who would want to share a deep connection with her, someone truly interested in engaging with her & someone with fairly good DOG-TALK skills. From what we have seen of GEMS thats the ideal for her in order to be relaxed & fully blossom into the sparkling GEM that she is and the Gemmie we see & LOVE every day!
Gemmie walks beautifully on the leash and is the definition of a loyal dog. When with her handler, she is 100% attentive to that person. She is so eager to please and greets with every person she meets here at Love Dogs with her classic Gemmie smile, waggy tail and happy hello. There's a great deal of beauty and happy that comes with Miss Gems!

Greeting Style
Gemmie's greeting style is polite and connected. She loves to meet new people and will promptly sit right in front of you as close as she can waiting for some pets. If Gemmie has waited long enough and didn't get any lovin' she'll adorably and gently paw your leg as if to say "Hey, didn't you see me down here?!" Gemmie rarely jumps, she has impeccable manners but occasionally she may pop up in excitement, and of course we love her for that!
Greeting other dogs & Dog-Dog play style
Gemmie prefers to keep to herself when it comes to greeting or playing with other dogs. She is completely non-reactive meaning when passing a dog or walking along side a dog she will not make a peep! However, when put in direct contact with another dog she will make it known that makes her uncomfortable. She wants her people all to herself!
Kitties?
Gemmie has not been cat tested yet but we can upon request.
A walk with Gemmie
Gemmie Gem walks fabulously on leash. She almost never pulls and will walk right by your side the entire time. Cars, people, kids, dogs can pass by and Gemmie won't stray from the partnered walk. If you say look, she'll whip her head up and make eye contact. If you stop, she'll immediately sit. Gemmie is so eager to please and loyal! Gemstar walks on a Gentle Leader head halter which is very similar to a head halter for a horse. It is a fabulous piece of equipment that helps keeps dogs focused by guiding their head in a gentle manner. Gems finds great comfort in her head halter. While walking, she'll want a chance to roll in the grass! One of her favorites!
Known Commands
Sit - Down - Stay - Wait - Fetch/Get your ball - Turn light switch on and off - Touch - Comfort (a command which she will come and lay her head on your lap)
