It has been a few months since Greta arrived and she has made strides! She's now taking brisk walks around the entire farm with and without canine companions! She looks up at her handler to check in.. full on gaze.. almost conveying her gratitude for allowing her to be a whole dog! Outside walking and exploring, Greta finds it easier to approach her handler and even enjoy some soothing strokes down her long "Doxie" back! She has an energetic walking style.. briskly moving until a scent catches her attention.. then she asks to pause and take time to check it out.
Greta has some favorite handlers.. familiarity and consistency matter a lot to her! We are so psyched to watch her eagerly approach her people! Greta has also come to enjoy staff social time out on the front porch at days end.. or spur of the moment play time all dog at liberty in the house!! Its there she can be free to mill around and be a part of a gathering .. choosing where to be, when and for how long! You can actually see her smiling & so completely relaxed and downright joyful at times! We all want to clap and cheer but that is not what our Gretata likes!! So we keep it to side glances and quiet rejoicing!! Hard not to pay mind to something that makes us all so happy.. There'll be a day when she finds her inner attention seeker.. in her own way.. of course!!!

Day one little Greta tried her best to disappear! She was so overwhelmed!! After some time to settle with a few dog pals Greta managed to accept leashing up and heading outside to a world of scents! JOY!!! We have taken in quite a lot of scared doggies over the years. Each one has their own way of coping with what must feel to them to be so scared .. too many new things all at once! We appreciate that their experience of terror .. and provide a calm soothing and quiet an environment as possible! Greta came up with her adorable sassy sister Gracie and we let the two huddle together until they take a deep breath! One thing that seems true across the board with all of the scared newbies is that they each in some measure are able to let go of their worries once their nose gets busy! While she wasn't keen on having us so near to her when leashing up but with a little encouragement and some jolly body language from the eager leader greeter, Genghis and Jewel, Greta was absolutely DELIGHTED to put her nose down and trundle along with her new buddies!!! She went from I wish I were invisible to WHOA!!! This is SO AWESOME!!!
Greta still has moments where she presses the "panic button'' but is learning to cope when these situations arise. During these moments, all she wants to do is find a safe hiding place. She will try her hardest to escape the area.. this mainly happens when meeting new people. It will take a few visits for Greta to begin to trust someone and we are hoping she can go to a home with another dog or maybe even one of her pals that are currently here!
