In the News!
We have come to know and understand SO many dogs over the dozen or so years we've been in rescue! We see them from the moment they come onto our radar screen, initially assessed by well intentioned but limited shelter workers & rescue volunteers .. they share their observations of each dog's behavior in the shelter setting, which is extremely difficult both for the dog and the person trying to get a handle on which dogs of the many in need are most likely to be successfully homed. People who do that work are to be appreciated and applauded. It takes a certain courage and strength that not many possess.
Our next chapter in learning about the dogs we pull from shelters comes from our AMAZING TEAM of caregivers at DAWG PATCH where they are boarded under the loving care of Lynn Angel. She offers a wonderful look into each dogs personality and incredible detail about how they respond to various stimuli. She cares for the sick, the old, the scared.. she and her staff see it all. Again within the limits of their environment.

Again within the limits of their environment.
We then hear what the transport team experiences during the long drive from North Carolina to New York.. we take all the info we've been offered and then observe the dogs as the transport van door opens. We have routines and various ways of creating the most calm & welcoming vibe for each"type" of dog.. Some are crazy little wiggle worms who can't wait to say hello and others who are so shut down and terrified they barely acknowledge our existence.
|
What comes next is FASCINATING!! That wiggly one that seemed to be confident and friendly with everyone begins to reveal he isn't that confident and not so into being friends with everyone... the scared dog who seemed like it'd take a lot to bring around starts to relax and trust and reveals that she just needed connection and routine to feel safe and then becomes the friend to all! Theres much nuance and tremendous variables too extensive to delve into here. Our focus this month is on the dogs who are for the most part, easy going, uncomplicated and a lot of fun.. AND may have one behavior trait or reaction to a particular thing that isn't by any means a "deal breaker" but does require awareness and understanding from his/her human friends! ( We actually think most dogs are that way but most people don't realize its until something happens! )
Something we've been noticing a great deal is how many dogs are in fact on surface simple and need of basic understanding of dog stuff from their humans... but for one "QUIRK".. Case in point Orson!
He was the super happy pup who came off the van wiggly and playful. What we know about him is even though he demonstrates a friendly approach with play bows and wiggles to other dogs and is clearly inviting interaction, we have observed Orson is not just absent of "doggie social skills" he's intense in his play, too intense, too forward for most other dogs! What does this mean about his adoptability? HES A GREAT DOG.. but not a dog park dog.
Orson is young, about 6 months old and may in the right hands develop good social skills and attend well to his humans direction but his in your face style with other dogs is a PART of him... a "QUIRK"
Having said that, our dogs live in an amazingly diverse environment at the farm but like all environments it has elements that shape how a dog behaves. It is active place and there are many dogs living in close quarters. This makes the same point about the impact environment has on a dogs behavior.
Something we are endlessly intrigued by and always learning about is how dogs are affected by environment.

Calm, balanced, confident, outgoing, friendly..
Calm, balanced, confident, outgoing, friendly..
Gentle, loving gal Cinder.. she is more in a dog than one can dream of! Cinder is even keeled at all times.. she walks with some of our nervous dogs and really provides a sense of calm and safety all around them. Cinder was originally pulled with her litter of pups (who have all since been adopted through SPCA) so she has a very motherly vibe to her. Patient and kind, Cinder accepts affection from new people with ease. She is such a leaner!! Often greeting with a cat-like lean and waggy tail.. check out her series of "leans" below!
|
If you're looking to add an active doggie with a major cuddle and chill button, look no further. Come out and meet Cinder.. you will be just as smitten as we are!!
Jewel
joins us at the Farm!
joins us at the Farm!
Jewel spent a wonderful three months in her foster home where she learned to navigate suburban life with her pal Luna and lovely foster mom Alicia. Jewel learned how super awesome a couch is (her fav cuddle spot), how walks to new places can be fun and not just scary.. and she woke up every morning with her head on Alicia's pillow!
Jewel has does extremely well, we are so proud of this little petite, nervous gal! Now it is now time that she joins us back at the farm for some more socializing and visits!
|
We know our sweet bashful Jewel is ready to take this next step in her journey and she is so ready for a new home!

February's Love Dog of the Month
Genghi!!
He has been so helpful to us in the generous way he acts as bodyguard & gives confidence to some of our new, very timid arrivals. Of late Genghi has taken little Greta under his "mighty" wing and enjoys escorting her all over the farm .. enticing her to use her nose and not worry about anything else..
|
Genghi's vibe is one of a leader... in the most endearing way...He presents as a mighty GSD.. full of confidence and a sense of law and order that is his to maintain!!!! He's very appropriate in his management style.. A perfect example of this is something that he did for us yesterday...Little Chloe who arrived on our last transport started showing some naughty behavior toward other dogs.. she was acting grumbly and bossy in the rudest way!!! So it was time for her to have a hike with Genghis! He "vibed" her with handlers reinforcement maybe twice.. and then it was done! Chloe walked the farm property with "officer G" happy and free to focus on scents and sights! Even when they sniffed the same fragrant spot , nose by nose.. or when they occasionally bumped into one another.. Chloe deferred to Genghi.. a little guy with big authority! A very polite and respectful Chloe enjoyed a lovely walk full of delights! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
|
Genghi loves a good cuddle and a soft cozy perch with his friends... & like most dogs, prefers proper etiquette in greetings, introductions and handling.. He is a doggie-dog ..with wonderful layers of personality and communication..

In the NewsBrown and Gracie’s big outing!!
Walking into a horse barn, with all the noises and people approaching, can be an overwhelming place for some dogs. For Brown and Gracie it is a huge step in their journey to a confident mind and body! Enjoy the photos for an inside look at this positive experience! 🎈
Brown.. our sweet, melts like butter during cuddles, fuzzy boy! He has some insecurities with approaching people and new environments that manifest into panic, barking and spinning.
Gracie is a nervous little sweetie, new to the rescue, and learning so many things that are brand new to her. She can also be a bit untrusting of new people and new environments. Gracie has astounded us with her curiosity and bravery! She has been overcoming her fears, one step at a time and is making incredible progress!
Handler Olivia has been working closely with Brown for months laying a solid foundation of trust and relaxation.. using the clicker for attention, calmly sitting at her side and loose leash walking help Brown process things that scare him.. rather then barking and panicking.
Walking into the barn, they were armed with chicken, the clicker and some good tools.. needless to say, Brown and Olivia did AMAZING! Brown was constantly checking in with Olivia and even shared space with someone new! Gracie got busying using her nose to curiously exploring the barn and also approached a new human friend! |
January's Dog of the MonthHugo! Our very own Circus Dog!!
Just look at Hugo's incredible jumping skills! When we say circus dog.. we really mean it Hugo knows an array of tricks and his repertoire continues to grow!
- sit - roll over - go to your bed
- down - beg - weave thru legs - stay - jump (super high!) - heel position - give paw - touch - heel - leave it - spin - scent work - agility jumps and go thru the tunnel Hugo is fascinated with trick training and learning new things in partnership with his handler. Problem solving with scent games.. clicker training.. agility.. obedience.. you name it and Hugo will enjoy learning it! Hugo has a wonderful happy, light on his feet way about him that makes him an absolute pleasure to be around! Hugo makes us smile in awe at his antics, non-stop! He's such a special, super fun doggie!! |
Genghi gets a bath! At first.. Genghis wasn't quite sure how he felt about the whole water and soap situation! Michelle and Beck used one of our trusty tools.. peanut butter on a spoon, to help ease Genghis' worries and it worked like a charm! He licked and licked the peanut butter and all his bath worries faded away.
After the bath came the real fun though... As soon as the towels were laid on the floor Genghis went to town! Rolling, rubbing and having the time of his life. He is such a super happy little doggie!! Check out the fun after bath video below! |
|
Quixote Owns the Office!
From Michelle: Mr Q is a sweet and lovable little guy. He’s very friendly loves affection and wants to just be near you. He enjoys being up on the desk where he can be close to me as well as look around and see everything that’s going on. He loves his walks and looking out the glass door. He is foodie and will “ask” for some more yummy treats! As in the video ❤️

Clicker Training at Love Dogs!
|
Check out little blind Daisy and handler Olivia's clicker training skills! ✨🐾
With the help of our trainer Jamie Ianello, all the handlers at For the Love of Dogs are currently working through Jane Killion’s Pigs Fly clicker training lessons. Each handler is working the whole program with two or three assigned dogs and it’s been so awesome!! Here, Olivia is hard at work with our little Daisy honing in on the skill "spin inside the box" all taught through free shaping clicker training. Why you may ask would we want to teach a dog to spin inside a box?! Its not the act itself as much as the process of communication between dog and human. Aside from being FUN for everyone it helps build the bond of trust! We are always looking for new and fun ways to enrich our dogs.. and this is just one of them! Sharpen our clicker training skills while keeping our dogs brains active... it’s a win-win! We highly recommend the Pigs Fly program to all shelter/rescue groups!! |

"SCOUT"
"SCOUT"
*Super smart, ready for anything.. active mind and body! She wants to work and learn and please.. keep her engaged and she will move mountains for you! Leave her to her own choices and she will entertain herself in many ways .. not all of them necessarily helpful!
* SCOUT craves TEAMWORK!! She had a limited set of "gears" when she first arrived... 1)ON, 2) 99% ON.. and 3) off. Good news.. because she LOVES to work, SCOUT has learned about all the mid zone energy levels she can embody since her BFF & handler Britaney has partnered up with her!

In video on right watch Britaney using a clicker and treat to reward Scout when she does what Britaney wants her to do. You can see Britaney gives space and time to Scout to figure out for herself what it is she needs to do that will produce a reward. Scout is quickly figuring out if she places her nose in a particular spot for a particular time CLIC-TREAT happens! Scout hadn't ever enjoyed that sort of calm exploration prior to her education with Brit! Its easy to see just how much Scout enjoys it and needs it! She's brilliant!
Scouts handler, Britaney is rightfully so proud of her girl! Scout is becoming a true partner, choosing to be with Brit as a team rather than launch into her own impulsive ideas!!
Loving prayers are needed for Our Sweet Elle <3
Our much loved, LOVE DOGS doggie, ELLE recently came down with what is believed to be immune-mediated encephalitis.. While the onset was sudden and alarmingly dramatic.... she is wobbly and weak .. we've been given hope that she can and we believe will return to good health. She's coping so bravely and enjoying all the attention she's getting from her circle of best friends. Please think of her!
|

Many thanks to Elle's extraordinary ANGEL team who have gone above and beyond to help her through this challenge! Kristin Desio, Dr Sarah Cutler, Erica Tomney, Jamie & the entire LOVE DOGS staff!
Our Rescued Dogs Journey.. a peek at how it happens...
|
Dogs having been selected by For the LOVE of DOGS & SPCA of Westchester are taken from the shelter by Elena Strauman and delivered to DAWG PATCH boarding where they will be treated like royalty! This is just one part of their journey on their way to you... their forever homes!!!!
|
We are often asked... " Why do you save so many Chihuahuas?!"
|
Short answer is WE LOVE THIS LITTLE BREED and all assorted mixes!!! Many rescues don't understand them so these darling entertainers are often left behind! From what we've experienced Chihuahuas have gotten an UNDESERVED bad rap as nippy, yappy, ankle biters!! Often not treated as DOGS Chis when deprived of dog fundamentals, adequate personal space, exercise, structure and socialization can become frustrated and try bolder ways of making their needs known!. At LOVE DOGS we see all dogs as DOGS first, so dogs here have every reason to trust their humans! Consistently given their voice and offered our understanding we found Chihuahuas and Chi mixes bloom into delightful, beloved companions & endless sources of hilarity!!! |
Check out more entertainment below courtesy of SCOUT!!!
Have a good laugh watching just a slice of Scout and Bodhi playing!! JUST HILARIOUS!!!!! Scout is a super smart, super confident, super interactive and a super peppy girl! She could squish Bodhi if she wanted but watch how she makes herself a great play pal for Sharon's Chihuahua Bodhi and how easy going and unfazed she is by everything!!!!!! Says a lot about who Scout is! She's waiting for her super person to adopt her for a lifetime of nonstop FUN!!!

October's Dog of the Month
Muttsy Mugs
|
We know and love this chocolate sprinkles and patches boy so well! He for reasons we can't figure out has been with us for a while. Mutts was a skinny, scared adolescent when he came to us.... all his parts seemed at different stages of development so he was kind of a klutz!
Dog Trainer Jamie fell in love at first sight.. ( as did we all ) not just because of his flashy, handsome appearance but because he was such an eager pupil! Muttsy excelled in his training and really enjoyed every moment of it.. He is a bit insecure and thrives with structure and finds reassurance in being guided and led by a fun, happy leader that he can please so easily!! For us he's a dream dog maybe because we are all so interested in everything dog!! We can't get enough of this sweet, emotive, engaged and smart big boy who thinks he's as big as his Chihuahua pals!! |

Enrichment is a HUGE part of our dogs daily lives.. and what makes Love Dogs such a special place for rescued dogs! Each and every day we spend with our dogs is different and uniquely tailed to each individual dog!
In the video above you'll see a sneak peek into one of our workshops! This workshop was Trick Training.. usually we use clickers but one of the dogs, Muttsy, is so scared of the clicker sound so we use the word YES as a marker instead! Here the dogs are learning "touch".. to touch their nose to the handlers hand. After "touch", they learned how to "weave" between the handlers legs! Not only are the dogs learning some fun new tricks, they're also learning to be calm and relaxed around each other with focus on their handlers! SO MUCH FUN for all!

Sweet Summer August transport brought us three fabulous little souls! Apollo and Celia are bother and sister from Chester SC! Celia is HW positive and will soon undergo heart worm treatment.. we would love to find a foster home for her!!! They're both so loving and sweet! Stay tuned for their profile pages to pop up with more info and videos!!
Summer pool fun with Gus & Beck!!
Gus LOVES the water.. this boy was born to be a water dog! Splishing and splashing, rolling over and chasing his extra large jolly-ball into the baby pool are all in a days work for Gus.. However, there was one thing that Gus would never do.. and that's jump in the pool with the hose running. Handler Beck saw this as an awesome opportunity to gain Gus's trust in her and work on him getting into the pool with the hose. Low and behold... she did it! Her and Gus worked as a team as he gathered the courage to step in with the loud hose. A brave Summer day for our "Homie" Gus! and job well done to handler Beck!

For June & July 2019 check out our EMILY's Dog up a tree series!!
Every so often we get some really funny photos of our dogs doing rather unexpected things from our EMILY! She has a way of seeing unique potential in the dogs and thinking of unique ways to showcase them... stuff that no one else even considers... Emily is a very imaginative, kind & relaxed LOVE DOGS handler and as such dogs tend to agree to pretty much whatever she suggests!!! Climb a tree and walk out on a branch...???? SURE!!!!!

YAY its MAY ...2019
,AS the delightful SPRING weather settles in, we are all out and about drinking in the beauty of the season. The dogs in our care experience what life can be like at a horse farm! This means they have many opportunities to meet and befriend horses and ponies.. get used to farm equipment, like tractors and meet a variety of people doing horse farm stuff!!
We are obsessed with interspecies relationships and might actually take more pleasure in these encounters than our animals companions themselves!! Here the stunningly handsome Bulldog mix RALPHIE practices the horse greeting ritual ( sharing breath ) with "Medicine Hat" pony Snow Baby.. Ralphie is a big hit with horses and ponies in general.. as he goes for walking tours around the paddocks all the horses approach him with great interest... one in particular EMERSON REALLY loves having Ralphie visit. He engages in run the fence line games and sends away his curious pasture mates so he can have Ralphie all to himself!!!! |
April 2019 happenings...
Poe our charming and unique "tripod" boy!!! His hind legs essentially work as one! He can do AMAZING handstands!!!! Seriously.. he lifts his entire hind end when he pees!! Poey is our super hero dog .. he has the spirit of a winner.. he overcomes whatever he has to in order to live his life as he wishes!!
Springtime is inspiration to stretch legs and explore new things.. including ideas! Right now we are exploring options to assist Poe in his ability to get around as much as his spirit wants to.. ( sometimes he gets tired and maybe a little sore getting along on his own! An idea of a cart has come into the realm of possibilities.. |
Anyone who might have experience with the use carts for dogs with hind end "issues"... Poe does NOT consider himself to have ANY issues!!! We'd love to hear from you! Equally so, experienced professionals in massage therapy and physical therapy for dogs like our Poe please reach out if you have ideas or even time to help our hero dog feel better ... we are all eager to try new ways to add to Poe's Happiness and comfort! No doggie deserves it more!!!

Serenade Your Dogs Month!
Elle enjoying Debs singing! |
One of our easiest ways to influence energy is to sing.. and talk as if you were preparing a 3 year old child for a great adventure! Upbeat and light .. your body language will automatically become more inviting and fun for your dogs to enjoy! Everyone feels better when singing.. notice the vibe shift into a lighter, happier more connected time!! Even when you have a moment of unwanted behavior.. usually distracting your dog by attracting your dog with happy, FUN and sometimes a fragrant and tasty treat ...does a much more effective job of shifting your dog into a more desirable behavior... and then don't forget praise that shift!! |

Eli goes in for knee surgery
Our lovely and worried boy Eli went in for knee surgery today with the wonderful Dr. Bonzinsky at Blue Pearl in Paramus. He is out of surgery and recovering well so far!
If you haven't read Eli's story already, the short version is that he was found terribly emaciated on the side of the road. We believe, before Eli came to us, that poor nutrition in his early life caused some of his muscles and bones to not develop correctly. He got along just fine (a now young and vibrant handsome boy) until about a month ago when we noticed some intermittent lameness caused by a luxating patella. We believe that this surgery will also correct a few other muscle-tightness in his back. Please send healing energy to our sweet boy! If you'd like to donate to Eli's surgery please email us at lovedogs.bedfordny@gmail.com! |
Welcoming on transport day<3
A beautiful and iconic "rescue effort" shot captured by Liza Margulies from our Saturday transport. Trainer Jamie, handler Michelle, and rescue extraordinaries Anne and Elena work together to gently coax new arrival Piglet from the comfort of his crate. With little Orly's help bottom right! Piglet eventually came out of his crate and is learning the Love Dogs ropes. We also welcomed Oreo, Orly and Troy. Their names may change but stay tuned for their pages to come up! |
SNOW DAY!
A peek inside our Round Table discussions
Every few weeks we hold Round Table discussions with staff on different topics that dive deep into the world of dog, our dogs and our mission here at Love Dogs - this weeks topic was picking apart the process in which we go through with each dog that we have here to make them the absolute happiest and set their programs up for such! Observing the energy we bring to the dog along with our intentions and how that meshes with the dog we are about to work with. Does this particular dog enjoy uppity, more bubbly energy with high cardio activities or would a calmer approach be more suited? How is this dogs current daily routine fitting in with their current state of mind? Is this dog bored? Maybe he should get his meals in tricky treat balls or during training sessions? Does he need to feel more included like group walks or pack hikes? These questions are just a few examples of what we discuss. Every dog here is seen.. fully and individually! Of course, these meetings always include doggies! They so enjoy the calm group time.

Delilah was out for a walk with handler Michelle and I (handler Amanda) was walking alongside them with another dog, Muttsy! (Check him out on his page, he’s a looker!)
As we were walking, I saw Delilah reach down and pick something up in her mouth. I turned to look at her and shrieked when I realized she was carrying a chipmunk! The little chipmunk must have fell from a tree and was lying unconscious in the road when Delilah discovered her. Knowing it was helpless, she gently scooped her up and held her softly in her mouth, like a mama holding her pup. At Michelle’s request, Delilah dropped the little chipmunk, that we presumed was dead. However, Delilah would not allow us to walk away! As I looked closer I realized the little chipmunk was breathing. I picked her up and we carried her. All the way home, Delilah and Muttsy were so concerned with their new found friend. They sniffed, licked and watched over the little chipmunk. After we got her home and warmed up, the little chipmunk started to perk up! She regained strength and was taken to our local vet for rehabilitation!!! Delilah is a hero!!

Poe loves Spa Time!
As most of you know, Mr. Poe has unique back legs.. we aren't quite sure how they got this way but it surely doesn't slow him down... not one bit! Poe runs around the yard in playgroups and goes on super long hikes without breaking a sweat.
One thing his legs don't allow is the ability to scratch himself! So we make sure Poe gets a ton of massages and brushing time to really satisfy those itches he must have. He absolutely LOVES being brushed! Just take a look at that happy grin on his face! |
Treadmill Time!

Super happy Browney doing his favorite activity.. the treadmill! Just look at that tail SWOOSH!! The treadmill is an awesome activity for the dogs. It works to build confidence and give them a steady energy outlet. Most of our dogs learn to LOVE it! |
Snow goes home!

Snow White came from Chester County South Carolina. A rural area with a teeny tiny shelter that has a very high influx of dogs. Snow was part of a 7 dog seizure from living in a back yard being taken care of only by a 9 year old boy. Snow was terrified of life and would cower and hide away at the sight of anything or anyone new.. After being with us for a few months Snow caught Leslie's eye, a long term friend and horse boarder here at the farm. Leslie took time out almost every day for 2-3 weeks to walk Snow with her dog Youkie to get to know her and get Snow comfy with them. Talk about dedication!!! Yesterday, Snow finally went to her forever home with Leslie, her husband and doggy brother Youkie. We are so happy for their complete little family and are so thankful to Leslie for opening her home and her heart to the sweet, nervous little girl Snow.

Hugo and Tink adventure!
Hugo is super curious, fun and confident when it comes to exploration! I took him to the outside porch area of an old Victorian house we have on property. On a day i brought my dog Tink to the rescue so she joined on the adventure! Hugo greeted Tink and invited her in as he took the lead exploring around the porch where there are little ledges and rocking chairs. Without hesitation, Hugo hoped right up on the rocking chair! As it's wobbling, Hugo turned his little roly-poly body on the small chair surface to face me and sat down waiting for a treat to come to a job well done! Most dogs would get super freaked out by the uneven surface.. not Hugo!! I then brought him over to a little ledge and said "get up". Sure enough, here comes sweetie pie Hugo leaping up on the ledge and immediately went into a down position as he waited for my next cue. Tink was right behind him too! Hugo absolutely makes an awesome trick dog!!

Michelle helps Piper find her dogginess
Piper came to Love Dogs a little apprehensive. While spending time with her for her daily care I noticed a hint of confidence! I had a hunch that she would enjoy a walk. I spent the first part of the day just letting her walk around a play yard with her leash attached her collar. Our amazing trainer, Jamie was also working with her to get her accustomed to slight leash pressure..After Pipers enthusiasm gave me the reassurance that I needed, I could tell that she was ready to try.. so I grabbed a bunch of special treats and a pretty purple leashed off we went! It took a few times but once Piper began trotting behind me, her entire demeanor changed! She became her whimsical, joyful and true self. Piper now walks at your side and even will rush ahead with a burst of excitement. I am so proud of her accomplishments. I can't wait to see what adventures await her in her future forever home!

An Observation by Amanda about "ELI"
t’s a rainy, thundering, Saturday morning. The dogs are pretty unhappy about having to go outside to do potty in this terrible weather, and then being cooped up inside until the storm passed. I’m making my rounds to clean kennels and fill water buckets, and I hear all these crazy sounds coming from the far end of the barn. I hurry over to see the commotion and it’s Eli! He’s in his kennel, upside down on his back with all 4 feet in the air, holding his squeaky toy in his mouth and flailing around joyfully entertaining himself. When he sees me watching he jumps to his feet wiggling his tail around delighted that I’ve come to join his game. 💜our sweet goofy self entertaining boy continued on pouncing on his toy and squeaking for the next ten minutes. Making the best of this rainy gloomy morning.
