Keep your dog mentally sound and HAPPY!

Primary to every relationship is respect, connection and a shared language.

We may not be sure  exactly what our dogs are thinking, or communicating to us but we know they are ALWAYS talking with us! They are always communicating even if we don't notice! If we think about it though we probably have a good idea of what it is that makes them happy or unhappy by observing & listening to the dog language we are familiar with...& theres even more, lots more that their behavior is telling us. Its a fun and rewarding undertaking to learn all things dog!

Even though dogs do not speak English, I often hear clients saying, "Rosco doesn't listen when I say sit, even though I keep telling him to sit" or "Why does Randy bark when I leave? I told him I would be right back." Your dog does not know what a command means if you haven't associated it with a behavior. Nor will he know that you are coming home soon just because you tell him so. We have to remember to communicate with dogs in their language and give them what they need.

There are a few key elements that you should incorporate into your dogs daily, weekly or monthly routine that will ensure that they are getting what they need to be mentally sound, confident and happy pups! Remember to always listen to your dog. What may work for a friend's dog may not work for yours. Not to worry, we will go over what to look for in your dog to make sure what you are doing is making him live happily to his full potential!

Lack of exercise is one of the main causes of unwanted doggy behavior including excessive chewing, barking, garbage knock overs, mouthing, jumping...the list goes on. No matter the size or breed, every single dog needs ample time outdoors romping and walking along with you. By not giving your dog this time outside to let off some steam you are doing her a huge disservice and opening the doors to bad habits. Plus, it's so much fun to go out and explore with your best furry friend!
Your dog needs more exercise if he or she is...
destroying things in the home.                           pacing throughout the house.
barking excessively.                                               digging in the garden.
uncontrollable jumping or mouthiness.           exhibits signs of separation anxiety.
showing OCD like behaviors.                               showing hyperactive behavior.
  • Structured walks are always better for you and your dog. No one wants to be seen being dragged down the street by their dog... I know I don't! If this is an issue for you and your canine friend, make sure you work with a trainer to get you and your dog working as a team. Walking in sync next to one another with a loose leash is healthy and builds a trusting bond between the two of you. This will also ensure no barrier frustration issues develop from always having a tense lead.
  • Mix up where you take your dog. One day its a hike in the woods, the next a beach visit!
  • Train your dog to have a strong recall and follow you off leash to give him some fun time to really let loose! It's always great to get your dog into fetch with a ball or toy. That will give him something positive and fun to focus on. PLUS this is loads of fun for the human and deepens the bond you share with your dog!
  • If you don't have time to spend exercising your dog, hire a dog walker!
  • If your dog has any type of anxiety, aggression or reactivity issues give them a ton of appropriate outlets to release pent up energy! If your dog has specific issues that hinder your outdoor time, work with a trainer to learn ways to make it work. After that, go out, out, out! One  major key component to behavior modification is exercise :)
