Zip-a-dee-doo-dah should be Lucie's theme song! This sweet little girl is happy as can be and has a major zest for life that is admirable. She's got a big dog personality in a perfect mini pint size body. When out on a walk, Lucie hops so light on her feet from one thing to the next... chasing leaves.. squirrels.. often then whipping her head back to check in say "hey, there you are!!" to her handler! She is always happy with her wide open smile and always looking for affection.. what a snuggler she is. During one of our staff meetings, Lucie took turns cuddling up to each of us by laying her chin heavily into our hands and gazing up to our eyes searching or reassurance and love.
We believe someone was not kind to Lucie in her life before she came to us.. when a quick hand is raised she'll cower and dart away. Immediately, she'll race right back to you, leaning her entire body into yours almost seeking approval. We can't imagine how someone could do that to little happy Lucie girl but she will never have to deal with that ever again, she is forever safe!
Lucie is naturally joyful and carefree but it does seem that the situations she was put in previously has shaped her to be a bit untrusting and sometimes wary of new people. We are working hard to gain Lucie's trust and confidence in many different types of situations. She's learning the commands sit, down, look, with me and even some spacial boundaries to help balance and ground her. You can tell that a bit of the "old Lucie" is blossoming more and more!

Lucie has become friends with some of the dogs here, especially Finney and Poe who are her best buds! She does have a "tough cookie" kind of demeanor when it comes to meeting other dogs so we try to place her with dogs that are super easy and the go with the flow types. Stay tuned for Lucie updates as we continue to get to know this lovely gal.
We recommend Lucie go to a home with children aged 12 and up.

UPDATE: Lucie's program is moving right along and she is gaining so much confidence within herself. She has made a few more doggy friends and we have begun to open her world a little more to busier places while still practicing the rewarding engagement games and commands. Lucie, along with mate Eli, took her first field trip into the horse barn to meet some of the workers and horses. The barn is an excellent place to bring dogs... so many smells, noises and areas to explore.
Lucie walked right in, tail and head held high.. she continued to check in with her handler Amanda, just as they have practiced! We took it nice and slow and asked anyone wanting to greet Lucie to please ignore her so she doesn't feel any pressure. We stood around with a few of the barn girls and Lucie built up enough courage to walk over and greet each one. One of the girls knelt down and Lucie happily welcomed Olivia's gentle, inviting pets under the chin. Lucie's inner beauty shinned and leaned into Olivia's hand with an open mouth smile and low soft tail wagging side to side. It was a beautiful moment of mutual respect between humans and dogs.
We are so proud of how much progress Lucie has made and we'll continue going at Lucie's pace, of course! It is important that the home Lucie goes to understands Lucie's communication. She is incredibly clear when she needs space and really blossoms when she's listened to!
