Prescott's Story

what he has taught us and how we have helped him
Prescott helped us to keep trying to see things from his perspective... he of course came to us knowing a lot about himself..  and bless him he never gave up trying to tell us all of it! He knew we were trying!!
Love Dogs is an organization that inherently thinks outside the box, we are all forever curious.. we try different things in different ways.. we observe .. ponder.. brainstorm..
In Prescotts case, we gleaned certain things about him..  his size,  his prey drive, his reactivity to other (big confident male) dogs, his sensitive nature, at times an OCD behavior ( digging and pouncing while making odd squeaking sounds) ..... but we weren't easily able to see the fuller, deeper truth about Prescott. We knew there was a good way to assemble the bits and pieces but we'd not actually ever met a Prescott before!!
EVERYONE loved him from day one.. we were constantly trying new approaches.. We moved him out of the barn and into the cottage with the small and older dogs which made him SO HAPPY!! He joined all the staff meetings and kept company with Sade' in the office..

Prescott's first day at LOVE DOGS

Prescott was called pretty boy at the shelter we pulled him from... He was not even a year old.. he was scared and timid.. but the shelter workers were fond of him and worked hard to find someone who'd see in him the sweet dog they knew him to be. We agreed to take him and after his vetting Prescott went off to our friendly boarding place DAWG PATCH where he soaked up a great deal of TLC and enjoyed the affection he received from all the female care givers.
When Prescott arrived to us at the farm he was fearful, easily overwhelmed and sought safety with female staff...  He was easy to handle.. happy to be adorned with his shiny new red collar.. and was actually  seemed relieved to be leashed and walked off to the fields..  Once at liberty in the play yards Prescott chose to stay near  his handler .. slowly and tentatively exploring a small arc of the yard .. He had a sad, forlorn look .. his body language told us he'd had more than anyone's fair share of change and uncertainty!
As the days went on we saw as we do with all the dogs who come to us a letting go of defensiveness.. and a gradual foundation of trust.
We learned from Prescott just how small he sees himself! He loves Chihuahuas!
