If you feel you must surrender your dog...

Our Part
PictureOur sweet Rose
We receive many requests from local people asking us to take their dogs, all for many different reasons. Over the last 8 years we have been rescuing dogs from kill shelters and offering them a second chance of knowing human kindness, belonging to a forever family and knowing they will be loved and cared for all the days of their lives.

We are a TINY organization with VERY limited space. At any given time we have 25 + dogs in our care at the farm in NY and an equal amount in southern boarding waiting for a spot to open up in NY.

Locally we have rehomed several dogs, taken in sick dogs from local vets, scared dogs from SPCA of Westchester that are having a hard time dealing with shelter life.. and taken in dogs when their human friend has died...
Some of our dogs have stayed with us for a year or more.. we have several who have been with us for 3-4 years.. we don't ever give up!!

We do understand that sometimes things happen that are beyond our control and we are faced with making a hard decision about a beloved family member.. our dog.  There are so many DEVASTATING CRISIS in shelters across the nation.. the horrors that take place in the lives of so many dogs is such that you can't believe a nation like ours could permit such abuse, neglect and disregard for the AMAZINGLY generous kind playful joyous forgiving LOVING creatures known as DOGS!! We are moved to act to save a perfectly beautiful and sweet dog from death countless times.. we hear horror stories that make it hard for us to sleep at night.. we've seen too many dogs that have suffered terribly in the hands of humans.

This is our mission..
PictureOur Sundae in a southern kill shelter before we saved her
..to rescue rehabilitate and adopt into loving homes dogs who were facing certain death.. there seems to be a growing number of people in our area that contact us with a request to take their dog because their circumstances have changed.

Its hard for us to accommodate an owner surrender when we have so little space.. taking one in, aside from many other factors means we pay board for a longer period of time on other dogs we've already pulled and who have been waiting.. until that surrendered dog is placed.. in some cases this means over a year with us before they are adopted to a loving home... we have paid staff to care for our dogs and they all receive medical attention they need and as much handling and training & LOVE as we can provide. So when you ask us to take in your dog it affects many other dogs, our budget and our resources.

Statistics
PictureOwners line up at Houston, TX Shelter to surrender their pets
One of the largest challenges facing animal welfare organizations today is the sheer number of animals in need of assistance. Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals arrive at one of the community animal shelters nationwide.
Although animals enter shelters for a variety of reasons, the majority of shelter populations are comprised of strays, rescues and surrenders:
  • Stray animals are often found on the streets and brought in by Good Samaritans or local law authorities. Unchecked stray populations tend to grow in areas without accessible and affordable spay/neuter services.
  • Animals rescued from cruelty can come from situations like hoarding cases, dog fighting rings and puppy mills. These animals often suffer from trauma and require extra care and rehabilitation.
  • Surrendered animals are animals whose owners can no longer care for them due to financial, behavioral or other unforeseen barriers.
Due to these overwhelming intake rates, shelters often struggle to adopt out all—or even most—of the animals who come through their doors. With so many lives at stake, it’s important to understand exactly what we’re up against:*
  • Of the approximately 6.5 million companion animals who enter shelters nationwide every year, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.
  • Each year, approximately 1.5 million animals are euthanized (670,00 dogs and 860,000 cats).
  • Approximately 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year (1.6 million dogs and 1.6 million cats).
  • About 710,000 animals who enter shelters as strays are returned to their owners (620,000 dogs and 90,000 cats).
  • Of the dogs entering shelters, approximately 48% are adopted and 20% are euthanized
  • Of the cats entering shelters, approximately 50% are adopted and 27% are euthanized
  • About twice as many animals enter shelters as strays compared to the number that are relinquished by their owners.
* Currently, no government institution or animal organization is responsible for tabulating national statistics for the animal protection movement. These are national estimates; the figures may vary from state to state.

DO NOT
Whatever you do, do not post your dog on Craigslist, create flyers or post on other online markets!!! We could tell you stories that will make your hair stand on end. Unfortunately people who shop for bait dogs for fighting rings shop on these sites!!!

If you MUST give up your dog we encourage you to visit your local humane society.. be responsible for what happens to your dog after he/she leaves your home. Don't assume your dog will be cared for.. he/she depends entirely on YOU to care enough to do the right thing! Take the extra time and effort to be 100% certain your dog will be well cared for and treated with love. DO NOT ASSUME someone else will do that...  no matter what they say! It is very difficult for dogs to be separated from their pack.. even though dogs by design are determined to be HAPPY they deserve to be carefully and lovingly placed.
