Vince
Male / 6 Years Old / 10 lbs
Approaching us was out of the question the first week or some arrived... initially Vince trembled, sought hiding places, was fearful and demonstrated a life and death need to have distance from people!!! We believe Vince must have had previous trauma with human contact and the leash with because he exhibited paralyzing fear at times. Our goals… loosen him up with play and doggie friends, create pressure free opportunities for him to explore at will our environment his fellow dogs and of course all of us, his caregivers and future friends!!
Vince has a wonderfully agreeable nature... once he believes he is safe and his needs are understood & respected. He can be delightfully playful at times, he is super smart with has a very curious mind… With pressure off, Vince felt free to explore. Having the opportunity to come and go , approach and withdraw on his own terms enabled him trust that his voice would always be heard! Having choices about contact with people made him feel safer and safer until he actually not only was at ease with contact but also sought affection!! Our hearts burst with joy!!

Vince really enjoys being out and about in the yards with his pack of doggie pals! He in fact, he gained a great deal of confidence by watching his fellow dogs approach people .. get loved on, played within enjoy all interactions! Being such a defensive guy Vince had developed keen powers of observation.. so he also saw that no dogs were handled against their will, they were respected and always given a choice. He happily follows us and his dog pals out into the yard for some play and ALWAYS pops right into his pen when it's time to go back in. Outside, Vince creates his own games with us where he'll stand back and "errruf, errruff!” until we toss some treats for him to chase!
Vince learned the joys (freedom & safety) of walking on leash by sharing pack walks with some of his calm, confident, easy going, doggie friends. He had such happy time and loved every minute!! He looks forward to his daily walks now and is great going on long perimeter walks on a 15 foot leash!! He, like all dogs gets a lot of fulfillment in the free to follow a scent outings! We are so proud of our little brave Vince!! Its a very special kind of reward for all of us to watch frozen by fear dogs learn they can trust the world around them!!!
Vincent will still need reaffirmations that all is well and the new rules of respectful engagement are still and will always be in place.
